INGUINAL HERNIA PAGE

Inguinal Hernia Repair in Hampshire

An inguinal hernia appears in the groin when tissue pushes through a weak point in the abdominal wall. It often causes a visible bulge, discomfort, or pain during lifting and exercise. Inguinal hernias do not resolve on their own and usually increase in size over time.

I provide specialist assessment and treatment for inguinal hernias across Hampshire, Southampton and Winchester. During your consultation, I will review your symptoms, examine the groin, and discuss the most suitable treatment options.

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair
Keyhole or laparoscopic repair uses small incisions and a high-definition camera. This approach offers clear visualisation of the groin area, reduced post-operative discomfort and a faster return to daily activities. It is particularly effective for bilateral hernias, recurrent hernias and patients who wish to minimise downtime. Read more about laparoscopic  surgery here.

Open inguinal hernia repair
Open inguinal repair is a reliable and long-established technique. It is performed through a single incision in the groin and remains an excellent option for some patients, particularly when a straightforward repair is required.

Recovery and aftercare
Most patients return to light activity within one to two weeks, depending on the type of repair. You will receive individualised aftercare advice and support to ensure a smooth recovery.

I welcome patients from Southampton, Winchester and the wider Hampshire region for fast access to expert groin hernia treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@mrnigeldsouza.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Typical symptoms include a groin bulge, discomfort, aching, or pain during lifting or exercise. Symptoms often worsen over time.

Most inguinal hernias eventually require repair because they gradually enlarge and can cause increasing symptoms.

Laparoscopic repair offers quicker recovery and less discomfort. It is ideal for bilateral or recurrent hernias, though open surgery remains effective for many patients.  Read more about laparoscopic or keyhole repair here.  My bespoke treatment recommendations will be based on your individual hernia anatomy, your personal preferences and the evidence-based guidelines from the European Hernia Society on inguinal hernia repair.

Most patients return to light activity within one to two weeks, depending on the type of surgery and personal comfort.
