What is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery performed with the assistance of advanced robotic systems. During the procedure, Mr D’Souza sits in the operating theatre at a console to control a robot equipped with specialized instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. This system allows for greater precision, flexibility, and control than traditional techniques.
Despite the name, the robot doesn't perform the surgery on its own — Mr D’Souza remains in full control at all times. The robotic system enhances the surgeon’s ability to perform complex procedures through small incisions. If the procedure cannot be completed with robotic surgery, there is the option to convert to a conventional laparoscopic (keyhole) approach, or an open incision.
Benefits of Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery offers several advantages compared to traditional open surgery and standard laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, including:
Mr D’Souza audits all his patients outcomes in his private and NHS practice. He has superior results to published national and international benchmarked “textbook outcomes”, despite a complex, high risk case mix in his NHS practice.
General and Colorectal Procedures Performed Robotically
Robotic-assisted surgery is commonly used in both general and colorectal surgical treatments. Here are some procedures that may be performed using robotic technology:
Colorectal Surgery Procedures
General Surgery Procedures
Mr D’Souza will determine whether robotic surgery is the best option for your specific condition, taking into account your overall health, diagnosis, and treatment goals. If robotic surgery is not appropriate, he is a highly experienced laparoscopic surgeon, and still regularly performs laparoscopic surgery.
What to Expect
If you are a candidate for robotic surgery, Mr D’Souza and the peri-operative team at the Spire will walk you through the process, including preparation, the procedure itself, and recovery expectations.
